Hippos
Hey! Today we'll learn facts about hippos. Hippo is one of the biggest mammals in Africa and one of the most dangerous! Males' weight can reach 3,000 kilos (3 tones). Their full name is "Hippopotamus" which means "river horse". The male is called "bull", the female is called "cow" and the baby is called "calf". Hippos live in big groups, where the male dominates. There's only one male in the group. When another male visits leader's place they start to fight. The male who will win is the new leader of the group. During the day, hippos relax under the water, because the sun burns their skin. They come out of the water at night to eat grass or (river) plants, but they are in danger from lions. They should go to eat in groups, differently, lions may hunt them, in order to eat them. Hippos have to return to the water until the sunrise. Did you know that hippos cannot sweat? When they are out of water for hours, they take out a red liquid which protects them from the sun. Scientific name: Hippopotamus amphibius
